Increasingly frustrated about the inhuman disparity between rich and poor in our world Karlheinz Böhm, an actor committed to social-politial issues, founded his Ethiopia Aid on 13 November 1981 with donations from the ZDF TV show “Wetten, dass..?”.

What started as a modest, realistically planned initial project has since developed into a highly regarded aid organisation in Ethiopia, which today provides unconditional help in eleven large regions, independently of political, economic and religious interests. Its missions extend from the dry and hot Babile region in south-east Ethiopia to the malaria-ridden and erosion-damaged Central Highlands, from the western rain forest in Illubabor province to Tigray province in the north of the country. All projects are geared to existing conditions and planned and implemented with the involvement of the local population.

In addition to the building of schools, hospitals and wells for drinking water, the common goal of the projects has been to secure the livelihoods of the local people and improve their quality of life in the long term with training programmes in the agrotechnical sector, soil conservation measures, reforestation and improvements in agriculture and animal husbandry. The indigenous population should have the opportunity to maintain a decent standard of living, independent of foreign aid.

Under the chairmanship of Karlheinz Böhm and his wife Almaz Böhm (Executive Officers) the work of Menschen for Menschen has become a synonym for effective aid offered in the context of a mutual learning process. The results are achieved together with the population, helping them to develop a sustainable future.
